The Gospel of Matthew – The New Testament. Matthew begins with Jesus’ genealogy and birth, then moves on to his miracles, ministry, and teachings. The Gospel of Matthew consists of 28 chapters, which are often divided into seven sections:
Chapters 1–3 and 4–7 introduce Jesus as Messiah and God’s Kingdom,
Chapters 8–10, 11–13, and 14–20 invite people into the Kingdom’s power, and
Chapters 21–25 and 26–28 conclude with Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.
In the Gospel of Matthew he is telling the true story about Jesus coming into the world as the Christ the Messiah – from Abraham, connecting the story that had begun in the Old Testament. And he does this by beginning with a genealogy.
Matthew is retelling the story of the Old Testament through his list of people, probably in hopes that when people read the genealogy, it will remind them of their roots when they’re mentioned in Genesis.
It is also a reminder of what God had already been doing for thousands of years right up to and continuing through the story of Jesus. This was Matthew’s way of saying, “This good news about Jesus is the fulfillment of what God had promised long ago!”
So in my personal Bible studies I am starting with The Gospel of Matthew – The New Testament. I will be posting chapters and verses as written in the King James Version Bible along with my summary of each chapter.
